Gear Review: The Dorcy High Lumens Flashlight
I recently received a flashlight to review – the Dorcy High Lumens Flashlight to be exact.
But as my daughter so kindly pointed out – it’s a flashlight. What’s the big deal?

The Dorcy flashlight
This isn’t just any old all-purpose flashlight like you’d find in the budget bin of a Canadian Tire store.
If this flashlight were human it would be George Clooney. It’s sleek and sexy with a touch of silver – just like George.
It’s got a non-slip grip. And one heck of a powerful light – boasting 618 lumens to be exact. Lumen is the technical term that refers to the amount of light the human eye perceives. For comparison’s sake a 60-watt incandescent bulb produces about 800 lumens of light.
It’s also a flashlight with an LED bulb – as opposed to the standard filament flashlight bulb. This is hugely important. LED bulbs – just like their counterparts in home lighting – consume far less electricity so batteries last longer. To pound that point home consider this; if you replaced the flashlight bulb that comes in the Mini Mag light with an LED light, you would get three times the battery life and double the brightness.

A very powerful beam from this flashlight
The Dorcy LED flashlights use six AA batteries. They’re a snap to install. On the highest setting the batteries will last 5.5 hours and on the lower setting they’ll last 25 hours.
There are additional features you don’t find in your standard flashlight:
- The beam from this flashlight projects a whopping 363 meters (over 1000 feet) on the high setting and 197 meters (646 feet) on the low setting.
- Construction of the body is with aerospace grade anodized aluminum so it’s lighter than it looks.
- It’s weather resistant thanks to o-rings that seal out dust and moisture.
- It’s compact.
This is truly the perfect flashlight for camping and fishing trips, for fixing the car and it’s a great one to put by your bedside table too. The only downside to this flashlight is the price. At $79 it’s expensive though at least the batteries are included with it. You can buy it online here.
If you’re looking for a powerful, high lumens flashlight with movie star looks then this is the one for you.

Wow, that is a huge projection – and from something with movie star looks – it’s a winner.

@Jan It is hard to get excited about flashlights but this one truly is amazing. I couldn’t get over what a strong beam of light it produced.
Sold! I’m into everything LED. Plus that projection is impressive.
It’s well worth the price.

@Marcia I love the fact this flashlight has such a long bulb life and the beam is something to behold.
