I have been bobsledding on the Olympic course in Calgary. I have been scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef. I’ve even jumped over a rattlesnake and swam with sharks.
But none of these adventurous activities remotely prepared me for a test drive on a course at the Porsche Factory in Leipzig, Germany.
Imagine being thrown back in your seat as you rocket from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in under four seconds. You’ve got a death grip on the handle. All your senses are telling you that you’re going to die.
And that’s just the start of what fun looks like at the Porsche Factory in Leipzig, Germany.
I willingly signed up for the test drive with a professional driver who didn’t look a day over 20.
I was one of the first travel bloggers to willingly hop in the Porsche – so I truly had no idea what to expect.
Burning rubber, smoking tires, controlled skids and speeds reaching 200 kilometers an hour are part of the experience.
And all in this little beauty pictured below.
The plan – drive the course you see in the photo. Can you count the curves? Let’s just say – don’t eat or drink much beforehand. Stops are sudden and abrupt. There are forces on your stomach that it has likely never experienced before.
And the acceleration is unreal.
Fortunately, on the day I did the test drive, the track was dry. I can’t imagine the skidding on a slick, rain coated surface. The driver, I was later told had been doing this for seven years …for five hours per day, and never has there been an accident.
But I didn’t know any of that before I got in.
The course is one giant lap followed by another half lap where you get the opportunity to speed up a hill with a tight curve at the top. Then you roll into the finish line to the cheers of your fellow bloggers.
Was I scared? Absolutely.
Would I do it again? Definitely.
Despite all my senses screaming at me – telling me that this was a stupid thing to be doing, I have to say it was exhilarating. I didn’t kiss the ground after getting out of the car but that’s what I wanted to do.
So should you find yourself anywhere near Leipzig – in northeastern Germany, book a test drive and see what fun looks like when you hit speeds of 200 kilometers per hour. Just don’t eat beforehand.
Thank you Tourism Leipzig for organizing the Porsche Factory tour and test drive.
